Private Pilot Certificate

Private Pilot Certificate

What is a private pilot certificate?

A private Pilot certificate is the initial license for people looking to learn how to fly; it is similar to earning a drivers license for a car. It is the first step that people can take for learning to fly, whether they want to fly recreationally, or if they are looking to make flying a career. We can offer the training required to earn your Private Pilot certificate.

What can I do with a private pilot certificate?

With a private pilot certificate, you can act as Pilot-in-Command (PIC) of an aircraft. If you fly with passengers, you may be able to split the cost of flying with them, however, you cannot be compensated for your flying. There are certain requirements that you must follow for the type of aircraft that you are able to fly, which we will review with you in detail during your flight training. If you have a specific aircraft that you want to fly, that may include a type rating and checkride, depending on its weight and type category.

What kind of aircraft can I fly with a private pilot certificate?

As a private pilot, you are allowed to fly any aircraft for which you are rated. Being rated means that you successfully completed training in a specific category and class rating of an aircraft. An example of “category” would be “airplane” or “helicopter”, while an example of a “class rating” would be “single-engine land”, which means that the aircraft has one engine and cannot operate on water. We can help you with flight training for Airplane Single-Engine Land aircraft.

How long does it take to earn a private pilot certificate?

Many people can complete their private pilot certificate in 6 to 12 months. However the time will vary based on how often you are available to fly, weather, and finances. We recommend that you fly at least once per week, to keep from losing too many skills in between flights.

What are the eligibility requirements for a private pilot certificate?

To earn a private pilot certificate, a pilot must:

  • Be 17 years or older
  • Read, speak, write, and understand English
  • Hold a U.S. student pilot certificate, sport pilot certificate, or recreational pilot certificate
  • Receive flight training and a logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor
  • Meet the aeronautical experience requirements for the aircraft rating sought
  • Pass a practical test for the aircraft rating sought

Reference 14 CFR §61.103 for a complete listing of all requirements
